Procedures for the birth of a child: health care

One of the first procedures we have to do after the birth of the baby, together with the registration in the Civil Registry, is apply for healthcare.

Between the fourth and eighth day of life, the baby must be taken to the Health Center to have the second heel test (the first one is done at 48 hours in the hospital) and the first check-ups after birth. To do this, you must be registered in this system as a beneficiary.

Health care consists of the provision of medical and pharmaceutical services for the holder and their dependents.

The procedure to register the baby as beneficiary is done at the offices of the Social Security Institute (INSS) and it is necessary to present:

  • Certificate of inscription in the Civil Registry or Family Book stating the relationship of the baby with the right holder.
  • Social Security card of the holder (mother or father) in charge of who will include the baby.
  • Form P.1 for inclusion of beneficiaries that you can download from the internet or find it in the Social Security offices.

Who can do the process?

The father or mother, depending on which one is affiliated with Social Security. If both are, the baby can be included as a beneficiary of either.

If the parents are separated, attach a separation or divorce decree.

The health card

Once the procedure has been carried out at the INSS, with the document proving that the right to health care for the baby is recognized, you should go to the Health Center to process the issuance of the health card.

The card will be mailed to the family home, indicating the name of the pediatrician designated for the baby. Until it arrives, the baby can be treated to perform the first check-ups.
