Summer camps: important things to keep in mind

During the summer months there are many parents who choose to point their children to summer camps.

Some do not even consider it as an option for children under 5 or 6 years, however today there are offers for all ages. Almost all parents have to work during the summer months so they cannot take care of their children at home and decide to enroll them in a course, camp or summer school.

They are places where they usually do outdoor activities, workshops or games that help foster their social skills through contact with other children their age.

First, the most important thing is to choose the most suitable for our children. But once we have found the one that best suits the needs and desires of children, we must take into account some recommendations before hiring. All camps must meet some minimum requirements that we have to check to avoid problems.

Information

Information about a camp usually comes from other parents or through brochures. In both cases we must ensure that the information is correct so as not to bring us unpleasant surprises.

The information that appears in an advertising brochure is binding, that is, the company must comply with what it puts there. It is not legal that when signing the contract, conditions differ from those advertised.

For their part, if they have told us about this or that camp we must go to the place and ask all the pertinent questions, know the facilities, ask about the type of activities, schedules, food, etc.

Insurance

All companies that offer this type of service must have contracted accident insurance for any mishaps that the child could suffer in their facilities or during the practice of some activity.

You must also have contracted a civil liability insurance to face a possible compensation that would be forced to pay the user if it were the case of being faced in court for a problem.

If the child is a beneficiary of private medical insurance, it is convenient to take a photocopy of the card, as well as a photocopy of the Social Security card for any accident that could be suffered.

Transport

If the summer camp implies that the child is transferred by bus, it is convenient that we inform ourselves of which company is responsible for the transport, if the vehicles have seat belts and if a companion goes to the care of the children. In addition, you must also have mandatory passenger insurance (SOV).

Other aspects

In addition, before hiring any summer activity we must have information on:

  • Name and full address of the person responsible for the offer

  • Full price of the activity, including taxes, breaking down, if applicable, additional expenses, increments or discounts to be applied. This way we will avoid taking surprises for “ghost” services.

  • Payment conditions

  • Start, end and duration of the contract.

  • Procedure by which you can terminate the contract and if you are entitled to a refund.

  • Whenever you give money you must demand a receipt, even if it is a signal that will then be discounted from the final amount.

Whether before signing the contract you consider that any of the clauses is abusive or if during the summer course any of the services has not been fulfilled as promised, you can always record it on a claim sheet or make a complaint in The nearest consumer office.
