The birth of twins

Luckily, it no longer happens as before the mothers learned that two (or more) babies were coming at the time of delivery. Now, thanks to ultrasound we can know much earlier and we can better prepare for childbirth.

Many women, especially first-timers, often feel restless about the time of delivery, especially if it is a Multiple birth, or more than one baby, with the added concern of the risk of premature delivery.

One of the characteristics of multiple births is that they usually occur before the 40 weeks of gestation of a single baby. The average is between 35 and 37 weeks.

As soon as you enter the delivery room, a monitor will be placed to control babies and detect possible symptoms of fetal distress. The medical team will be larger than usual to better assist the mother and the little ones. In the case of vaginal birth, the interval between births is usually less than one hour. If it takes longer, the doctor will make a decision, probably to perform a C-section.

Not all multiple deliveries are necessarily by caesarean section, but there are more risk factors than in a normal delivery that can make the doctor consider it better to perform it.

The position of the babies also determines the type of delivery, since if the first baby is not placed on the head it is very difficult for the vaginal delivery to be viable. However, if both are well placed, it is more likely. There is also the possibility that the first is born vaginally and the second by caesarean section. When it involves more than two babies, it is almost certain that a C-section will be performed.

If you are waiting for two or more babies it is better to talk with your doctor about the delivery, who will give you the necessary information and although, decisions are usually made in the delivery room according to the state of the babies, it will give you peace of mind about the protocol to follow.
